Starting Over Six Year Later – Community Service

6 Years. That is the amount of time I have invested in this rebirth, coming from the streets and working my way step by step, and over the posts. Just over half a decade to change your life, and it has not been easy, but it has been moving in the right direction. Since starting Portland state my time volunteering has been tracked with a couple outliers due to me not understanding the system or not caring to in the first couple months. I didn’t think it would amount to much then. I started my journey coming back 6 years ago and here are all the committees I have or currently been on.

Now granted there is some funny paperwork, the cbacs actually had not been merged so I am by the paperwork in for both of them separately and the merged version. County code. 10 different groups. 30 Committees and sub committees for 37 terms and chairing 5 times

All of this shows up save for the PCC is seen in my work volunteering where since the start of the school year last year (September 24) I am looking at about 290 volunteer hours on top of being a double bachelor student.

I have helped make decisions in the school, advocate for handling business ourselves, got programs started and kept some under budget. Allowed people opportunities because of good decision making and all of this has been in six very seemingly short years.

I have competed in finance competitions; I have made the thousand-pound club in weightlifting with bum knees. I have written books, that people have read, not many obviously, but some have, and they enjoyed it. Looking back sometimes it’s odd how far you see the path behind you stretch and realize things may be in range if you give yourself some credit.

Just a thought.

Tired from DC

Welcome to the nightly ramblings.

I went to Washington DC over the weekend and I felt exhausted returning. Ten hours in a metal tube between going and returning. Now some will say how it was horrible, and if you saw it that way, I didn’t.

Now as much as I bang the drum on Portland and its ills there is something I would like to make clear. Just because I had a good time doesn’t mean there are not things to fix, there are many things to fix in any city and for those mad that newer people don’t see it is easy enough to explain. For me I came form Portland, I know what Portland looks like in good and in bad times, I have that data and those scenes already in my head. If I don’t have one or the other of good or bad I will just likely sign off it is doing fine.

The reason for that is that without knowing both you do not know if it is good or bad. Some people think Portland is great, one person explains it is nothing like Memphis. We are not in Memphis though for our conversation we are in Portland so grading needs to be the right standard.

Also, it angered me immensely that everyone was showing the Portland protests on loop. Washington DC was a place I enjoyed although I must say Portland is my home, and while it is nice to see how other cities work it is nice to go back and try to make something out of the problems that run rampant here.

Now this is more of a check in piece as trying to recover after 60 hours of stuff to do and 10 hours of flying has made me a very exhausted buffalo. I will say I walked for a couple hours and while I did have to pay for it the next day, and I didn’t go very fast it was still more then before so we can still keep moving up on that account.

More tomorrow

Heavy Duty Volunteer

In my volunteer work, I have been keeping track for the university because you get an award if you do so many hours in a twelve-month period. Last year I got 148 hours getting me to the second highest level and 150 is the minimum to get into the highest level. The count is from May 14 to May 14 every year and so far, this year after tabbing it all up I was at around 30 hours last year

I am at 72 hours this year, and the trip is volunteer service (anything I don’t collect an hourly wage on is something that can be counted) and that is including camps and trainings as well. This includes all my meetings and generally I do not claim any reading or studying resources I could almost double that if I did.

Getting that award would be nice because as a disabled person it is something that feeds the chip on my shoulder because every so often people think disabled means you can’t do something. I try to look at it that I will need to do it a different way, and it is a different way because my goodness my legs feel like iron most days and I will say my thighs are so big I can actually crush a melon pretty easily. My size allows me to do that pretty easily, but someone who can walk miles with a frame like mine is something that usually scares some people.

Another thing is the jokes, lots of jokes with me classifying as a heavy armor unit if you give me a slingshot. I have gotten used to them and some of the better ones still make me chuckle about it.

At my size I am the volunteer version of Roadblock(seen above), although I think he looks better then I do. Cannot complain for what I have though, I am making what I can work, I just need to make sure I rest well.

So now you know and knowing is half the battle.

Pet Peeves – Wasting Time in Politics

I do not like wasting time, it is one of those things that just drives at me because no matter what is done that time cannot be gotten back.

Seeing people from the state government try to prop Portland as some no problem paradise just pisses me off. We have crime problems, we have job problems, we have money problems and the most people want to talk about it is saying if you talk bad about Portland you are an evil MAGA.

I am a registered democrat and there are others who see this and look at the lies over the years and for those thinking Antifa is getting cleaner, they did this in 2020 with their free milkshakes and walk with families, they then poisoned a milkshake and turned it into a chemical weapon against Andy Ngo. How do I know?

I was at those protests five years ago, hell, you scour the video you will find me in a white and blue jacket. I was there and have seen the down fall and the same people who say there are no problems are now trying to show nothing is wrong when everything in their paperwork says otherwise. I have seen them try to barricade front doors since 23, the bags of rocks or the hap hazard stacks of bricks during the 2020 riots, the fireworks and items thrown at police, the hiding behind mothers who believed with them. The only thing I say what was wrong was this was something I tried to understand, I tried talking to them, and everything they said was utter trash.

Portland state had their library trashed causing more than a million dollars’ worth of damage in  a series of years where they had their budget shrink and had to make those cuts during more years of budgets shrinking. It is a lot harder to cut a shrinking budget then a growing one. We cannot as a school,(Portland state) as a city (Portland) or as a state (Oregon) be so foolish that we simply not look at out problems, and seeing that so many people want to brush them under the rug is absolutely infuriating because it means that all the good done is essentially wasted.

No program can last without funding, and no funds can be collected without people with jobs, and those jobs do not exist without businesses. Also these failed fact checks like the Oregonian is just a show of stupidity they claim no explosives have ever been used meanwhile there are videos in 2020 and 2021 of explosives being used. Hell, I saw them from a park trying to figure out why people would do this in the city.

I would have no problem if it had some point, but after five years of this, it clearly does not have one, it has been a waste of time and money for everyone in the city and the worst part is it does not even help their own case.

Gaslighting and picking the best times to show video just as a gotcha is the equivalent of someone hiding a broken plate behind their back because they know if caught it will mean they will be punished. Honestly I think we just need a better level of politician not more one way liberal or conservative, just more honest about the situation…

Maybe I need to think about doing something about it.

Dancing Madness

There is a lot of things to be angry about but Portland is my home, recently we had a large hoopla about the federal troops coming in. Now, unlike what seems the entirety of the vocal political class, instead of getting something done let us take a look at something substantial.

https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/portlandpolicebureau/viz/DispatchedCallsforService/DispatchedCalls

This is the screen where the data for the Portland police is tallied and this is the response time, and the reason why this is important is for a high priority call the time to get to a call is five minutes. High priority being your rape, murder, someone is getting expressed of the mortal coil or someone is trying to put something in someone.

The lowest time, lowest, was February with fifteen minutes. The highest was September last year with 25, and we don’t have data for September yet this year.

Now, this picture is the front page as of the last day in September, and this is all the reason why Trump can use Title X. for those new here I have been complaining about this for years and pardon me but you can’t beat the classics.

YOU CANNOT CLAIM NOTHING IS WRONG WHEN MORE THEN HALF YOUR CALLS Have A TEN MINUTE RESPONSE!

When your goal is five minutes, and mind you this is just high priority calls. After a year and the best you get is three times your goal, then you are understaffed and we have been. That is one reason for title X. Another is can the city effectively enforce the law. Looking at this, no. Twenty minutes means they cannot effectively enforce the law. All of this is not because Trump thinks Kotex and Portland are crap, these numbers are your problem, and if these get fixed there is no ground for them to say.

Now I have talked about this and people go” Well trump will find another reason”

Listen, I know I can be a bit abrasive. I have the personality of a cactus. When someone does not like you, you do not make their job to ruin your day easier. All of this is within the law, you don’t want feds here, get the house in order which people have been complaining for a long time.

Our mayor decided to dance instead of work on this.

Our city council decided instead of working to appear and use it as a political stunt.

Portland isn’t about finding the next democratic star, it’s about getting work done. If we cannot find people who get work done this time, maybe we need to have different people next time.

Dems are not making themselves loved or even respected and in Portland where one of the most liberal areas in the country stand, we are making sure it will not be standing like it should.

…..

Is there a need to say it?

Might as well at this point.

So, today’s contribution for me being the next oracle of delphi is fresh from the Oregonian. Mind you, this is the biggest paper in the region, and when I was beating the drums that we have problems back when we could have fixed it without major issue a few years ago, there had been some who had called me out for being pessimistic because the Oregonian didn’t talk about it. Go. Read the Opinion from the paper that people said they will come around when this paper does. While you do that please be aware of all the things in the past tense. The tense that things already occurred, the tense that actions have been committed.

The only reason I bring it up that I was right, was because I do not want to hear ow so many people could not have seen it.

https://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/2023/04/editorial-oregon-is-dealt-a-blow.html

Look at it all, read the article and let it echo especially if you were the kind thinking I as pessimist, because those people with high end college degrees? I was right. The city commissioners who said they know better? I was right. The people who lived in the pearl or in the expensive towers who thought they had a better grasp? I was right. People who thought measure 110 was going to happen and make the city perfect when I thought it would make it right? The only right was me, and all the others who could read to a third grade level and could see what was going on, and not be given nice words or pretty pictures when all of it is fake.

Between blog posts, less then seven days, no less then a business has shuddered a day. A day brings the death toll for a business some with thirty, forty, fifty years and all of them are now shells. Considering there are not enough to replace them means a bit of a problem. No longer helping the community, no longer making it better. Some may think I am being a bit crass, but when you are right, time and time again, and people do not listen, because I am not the only one, this is not some rocket science we are calculating on our fingers here.

I want Portland to be better, I want it to be the city I love again. However, the people who are so lost seem to put their hands up just saying an oops and then walking off like they did the right thing anyway. Well things have been a bit of a riddle, because I do not have the supplies to make any store or anywhere in Portland right now, not enough anyway to make more of a difference. Because one has to remember there is not a lot of help from the police, insurance is going to be higher, and often times one has to defend themselves, their has to be a way, but their needs to be a way to bring about ideas for business that bring back some of the safety of before.

Until the next time.

At Worse There Can Be Change

The city of Portland seems to read my blog because a few weeks ago I made a post that I wouldn’t write on it unless it was just something abyssal. A new high in low. It seems that it looked at my blog post, handed me a half open bottle of some hipster brew and asked me to hold it because it seems every day since then it decided to just keep digging for the grail in stupidity and I wonder here if they had focused such efforts into something good the progress that would be made.

So, rapid fire because Portland leadership is a font of idiocy so deep that we could only approximate the bottom. One. Jo Ann Hardesty One could lead a class on morals by taking what she had done in her job as commissioner and simply going, don’t do that. Now, that would be rude, she would have had to do one thing of good. Right?

Well, after running up debt and then being sued for it and then the hit and run debacle and then the uber debacle and then being an idiot in the pandemic, and the being an idiot during the homeless issue and backing the politics that drove business in the ground, and then not pushing for punishing the D.A for not charging those who had politics similar. I mean all of these are absolutely shameful. Calling a political opponent Republican when he is not just because he has a different opinion. Now, some may see that statement and think I support Rene. I have not seen his work and right now there has to be a major amount of work done for me not to count him as an abject failure just because he wanted the position. It is the risk that comes from people failing at it for long periods and really if one could fire the commissioners since Hales then many would.

The mayor before Wheeler I used to call him as interesting as wallpaper paste, now I have to say he had to be smarter then any person in politics. That or, he was one of the luckiest because after that things went down at the speed of gravity. Where things hoped to have change is after a cycle with the main morons and people went, there is no better candidate, no one wants to run and now we are happy with this. Well, happy is not the word I would use but people have shown they are willing to look away as long as things still stay as normal.

Wheeler, the mayor, went out to protest with people he thought would be the base of the city only to find out that he was wrong. Went on pushing the ideology and backed by the movements of the D.A crime spiraled out of control, police budgets cut, and then the spiral grew wider. There will be a time where Portland has to begin to grow but the ideology of the past decade needs to be discarded for the toxic process that it has been. Not because the political party is toxic, it isn’t but because what has taken Portland has been thought to be for some moral superiority and brilliant action when morally its often disgusting under the surface and tactically its as useful as a paper seat belt.

This is not going to Brown and what she did because she caused damages as well a lot of them, but everyone thought they could stand together against Trump instead of actually working on bettering their areas. If it had been done it would be the greatest flaunting against their foes because what the president had wished when those described above hated him, could look to their city and say. We are doing it and we got it. That would be too hard they found out and did the political thing of try to get people to look away except there was no place to look without their failings on full display. It is now something where other cities and states look at, and go ‘don’t be like that’.

I wish there was some good news, but there isn’t and won’t be for a while, but everything can change and Portland will too, it just may take some time.

Bad Apples in Education

Yup, visual aids today.

You know, it makes you wonder if they think everything is such a problem rooted in white supremacy why they should leave. But, let’s be honest, these teachers have excelled since allowing BIPOC students and others do not need to pass requirements because requirements are more challenging for them, and they can’t handle them.

No, this is not a joke. They actually said that. Time for some receipts. You see, a lot of results are only based on information released every two years, and the last set was 2019, and 2021 has not been released yet. I would wonder why but I can guess the term harrowing shit show does not even begin to describe it. So here is what we know before they try hiding the news that all of this has gone very wrong.

First, this will be based in my home state of Oregon. However, sources will have things so you can look to your heart’s content in your home.

You may have heard all these things about the educators in our state, and you have to think that people are doing so good here that we are just wrapping up details. That we have the rest of the world of education on lock in the state. We may act like it, but we could be no further from that. On top of a racist governor, not one who says anything is racist but an actual one when she claimed through her office that requirements are too hard and colored students cannot handle it. I have gone one about the education in the state with varying levels of patience. So pardon me if the people in this state crow like they have won the game only to act like a pigeon shitting on the chessboard.

Teachers are getting paid more in the state. The average is sixty thousand dollars. It is now more than the average in the state. A lot of them, I am sure, use some of that money and put that towards the class, they should not need to, especially with the budgets of money going to these schools, but there is something else that is going on as well. This will piss off many people, but at some point, the teachers as a whole, their work needs to be looked at, and we have to say, is this what we want for our next generations?

Oregon is against a lot of private schools. They make it very difficult to work here, and I wonder why considering their test scores. We have, as a state, tried to make it more inclusive but less useful. Well, when people are just sitting at a desk for twelve years and cannot make themselves breakfast or cannot balance a checkbook and I see they have a diploma, the blame goes to the schools. Parents should be teaching them something, but they should be able to work within the state system and be comfortable that they are at minimum being taught enough that they can be the best version of themselves. Some may argue with it, saying that it is too high a target. That may be true, except they aren’t even getting the majority of students to hit grade standards. About a quarter can do it, which is taken from the state’s report card. Science-wise, it looks like maybe a third can do it, and reading and comprehension are about as laughable as it gets.

We are in the unfortunate position that people should be looking at the school districts. We wonder if maybe they do not have the best intentions because, as we can see from the results, they do not have the best results for their effort. There is a lot that could be done, but when the results have been so low for so long, and mind you, this is with online schooling capabilities, then we need to wonder.

Is this system working? If not, why is so much money being put towards it when clearly it is not doing the job? The value that money is getting in the hands of the education system is losing value through their actions.

Now, does this mean there are good teachers in the state? Absolutely, I have had a few. The problem is I have also had some nasty ones. I will not think the good ones would be happy knowing that all the time, effort, and energy they put into their craft is being pissed one by someone who can barely read to a standard themselves and has to teach others to do it. Also, that little quip that is the best-case scenario because, let us say, some of these bad teachers who claim everything is racist and claim everything is a microaggression, and it hurts their feelings. When the best case is misunderstanding how things work by people in that position needs to be put in question because it is not good enough by many of the worst parts of it.

I say all of this because it seems we are not done with this year, and I hope things do get better for the sake of our future. I want the state to be the best in education. I want people to come to Oregon so they can say they went through our school system because of the intellectual rigors and challenges we provide. I want people, whether poor, rich, black, white, Asian, or Indian, to come to the state and say…

“If I can make it through the school system here I will be ready to go for anything life can throw at me.”

Unfortunately, this is not being done. In fact, people are leaving with fewer skills than ever as the world competes on higher stages. It seems students through the school systems, which means that we will at some point either take the initiative and fix it or we will have to do it when it breaks completely. Considering how low these test scores are, I wonder when that will be the case.

Brainstorming on the Police Issue

I am absolutely positive that this post will piss everyone off, but it needs to be said.

Currently the police are having a lot of issues. Some are calling for the disbanding of police department because they may need to get violent. Here is the thing I have a big problem with the police I am not a guy who says he loves the police. Full disclosure I have had police idiocy cost me something very dear and those officers specifically I got an axe to grind the size of Argentina.

There is a need that only the police can handle. We have cut back police response in Portland and we are at the lowest sized force in 23 years. Considering how gun violence has gone up and continues to go up it means we have some major problems that need to be worked out and the police are going to have to help with that because currently our Mayor is using private security and that as damning of his work as all the city commissioners, and it should because has previously noted they have failed.

How do we fix it though is the question and to do so would take a multi faceted plan to answer questions where people have an issue. First, it is to help the officers, in Portland it takes 2 years to be a full officer, and in it I would add also some study in law. I would try to restructure the training so we aren’t losing so much as upgrading in different areas and I feel a little bit of time learning the law will give them a little confidence to further add some capabilities explaining how things are in the laws they defend.

Another thing is that we need to take a look at what counts as the over bearing hard left trying not to hurt anybody’s feelings instead of solving problems style of politics needs to end. It is not working and after close to six years for Mayor Ted Wheeler and the four for Commissioner Hardesty. There is very little to show for the hundreds of thousands of dollars their paychecks have given.

Kowtowing to political groups for clout was a disgusting move as it painted the city in a corner and one it will take years to get of. Some who sympathize or claim they are a different group then antifa despite wearing the same colors, using the same tactics, and fighting the supposed same enemies is a lark.

All of this sounds like a big thing where some think I will get several american flags call myself a hardline gop and exclaim the virtue of pence.

Honestly, if you look back when BLM was getting a foothold in the city I did have some hope for them to be a positive change, and despite not liking how Antifa had started in the city with the proud boys I thought they could do good. I still think they can, but they need to change, and they need to do it.

When a large group of people throw Molotovs at a police station, set trash on fire, break windows and rob places that is a riot and at first sign it needs to be stopped no matter who it is and use the best tools to do so. I would offer two sets of tools as equal as I could make them taken from the capabilities and tactics from police around the world to do what they need to do and give them the best chance to succeed. Have the city vote. Don’t want tear gas or smoke, I have no problem then providing water cannons or dye cannons in case there were crimes done at such events.

When the city votes on set of items is being used that is it. No cutting tools out of the toolbox. Next we need to increase transparency. I would want in my hypothetical city a website ran by the city of Portland where the vest cams of officers would be posted with only being the defining details being blurred. If people want to complain they can do it from their home as well but it would be something where both sides would be heard. You would have a website where you can log in, check some video, and if they see something that the officers didn’t then there would be a line of communication where those things spotted, plans tweaked and further evolved. It provides nowhere to hide for those who are bad officers and good officers will be seen more.

Better training, a noted and understood tool set and near complete transparency. The counter point would be, crimes need to be charged, and if I found out my DA was releasing people based on political ideology I would see what could be done to either back the police who were doing their jobs, and to make sure others understood his failings weather we have to see if he had to be disbarred, whether some talk with peers above him has to be checked. In any case their would be options on the board to fix the problem either under his own power or under something greater. I say this because currently the district attorney for Multnomah County has caught a whole river full of hook kissers and let them go when normally they would be given jail time.

For those who want to just motor on from this wall of text, D.A needs to do their job, training and tooling the police would be redone, using input form the city and we are using transparency to open up communications online

Something I have Been Working On – Together We Rebuild

I had worked on some sticker designs for various things and while I am still working on the one for the blog, this had come in and I am thrilled about it.

Together we Rebuild, this will be on the product page soon, but i think with everything going in my home stat this could be a nice little thing. I just bought a hundred to give some away and what not. I think right now, everyone just needs to know that no matter how bad things you think are, together as a group of different people, with different opinions will work to make our lives better in the light of those who try to break it down.
